When I was young, I remember seeing velvet oil paintings for sale at the Shell station where my father gassed up the family Olds. That was my first introduction to an outdoor gallery of art. Rows of nicely painted Jesuses and white jumpsuit Elvises on rich black velvet – or on some days, beautifully muraled vans waiting at the pump – made my head swim with visions of Stupendous Art. I don’t know if this set me on a path, but I’ve always enjoyed these lowbrow offerings. Tattoos, cartoons, simple yet effective illustrations... It's pure joy to see some fun art with a story to tell or a product to sell.
